Host computer configuration:
-Incoming Remote Desktop Connections can
only be enabled on XPpro and Vista Business and Enterprise versions. The option
is not available on XPhome and earlier versions of Windows
-On the PC to wish you wish to connect
(the host) you need to enable remote desktop:
My Computer | Properties | Remote |
check 'allow users to connect to this computer remotely'
-On the same page click the select users
button and add any users you wish to enable
-If the user is connecting from the same
LAN they will use the computer name or LAN IP of the host computer
-If you are enabling to allow
connections via the Internet, traffic for remote desktop, which uses port 3389,
needs to be forwarded to the host computer. Details can be found for various
routers at:

-The connecting user will need to
connect to your public/WAN I{. This can be found by going to
http://www.whatismyip.com from the computer to which
you wish to connect.
Client computer configuration:
-On the connecting (client) PC you need
to have the Remote Desktop Client installed. It is part of Windows XP. If you
are using another operating system you can download it from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx

-To open the Remote Desktop Client
enter mstsc in the start / run box, or browse to; All programs |
Accessories | Communications | Remote Desktop Connection. If connecting to
a computer on the same LAN, enter the computer name or IP of the host computer.
If you are connecting to a remote computer, on the Internet, use the public IP
you obtained above from whatismyip.com
